  1.                          Mach-10 Main Menu Help File

  4. General
  5. -------
  6.        The Mach-10 system is initally setup up in a basic 4 menu
  7.   configuration with other miscellanious menus included for extra
  8.   features. The main sections are MAIN, MESSAGES, FILES, and UTILITIES.
  9.   They are briefly discussed below along with some of the other
  10.   smaller menus.
  11.  
  12.  
  13.         1) MAIN MENU
  14.  
  15.                The Main menu is sort of a throw together of all important
  16.             options that can't be directly categorized under one of the
  17.             other menus. From the main menu, you can easily get to almost
  18.             any other menu on the system.
  19.  
  20.         2) MESSAGE MENU
  21.  
  22.                The message menu provides all of Mach-10's electronic
  23.             mail services. Mach-10 provides a very powerful message
  24.             system which includes netmail/echomail capability as well
  25.             as a bundle of message utility functions.
  26.  
  27.         3) FILES MENU
  28.  
  29.                The Files menu contains all of Mach-10's file-transfer and
  30.             listing functions. Users may upload/download files, browse
  31.             through the file catalogs, and exercise many different
  32.             search features to get what they want.
  33.  
  34.         4) UTILITY MENU
  35.  
  36.                The Utility menu contains features that are used to tailor
  37.             Mach-10 to your preferences as well as view your current
  38.             status, see who's online, etc.
  39.  
  40.         5) STATISTICS MENU (optional)
  41.  
  42.                The Statistics menu has all of the features of a complete
  43.             call-analizer for the bbs. It can report the current status
  44.             of the bbs system as well as user rankings and statistical
  45.             information based on user-record surveys.
  46.  
  47.         6) CURRENT EVENTS MENU (optional)
  48.  
  49.                The Current Events menu has various functions for posting
  50.             your opinion on various events. Topics are included to
  51.             stimulate discussions and a voting booth also lets you tabulate
  52.             the results of many of the users' optinions.

  55. Main Menu Commands
  56. ------------------
  57.  
  58.   [B] DISPLAY BULLETINS
  59.  
  60.          The Bulletins feature allows you to view the various bulletins
  61.       that the sysop has placed up for public viewing. Bulletins may be
  62.       system-oriented or just general text files of interest to users.
  63.  
  64.   [C] CHANGE SUB-BOARD
  65.  
  66.          Mach-10 is equipped with a very powerful feature know as
  67.       Sub-boards. Sub-boards allow specail sections to be set up which
  68.       may be tailored for a particulare interest. Some Sub-Boards have
  69.       their own message and/or file areas as well as bulletins and
  70.       welcome files. (NOTE: A Sub-Board is different from a message
  71.       area)
  72.  
  73.   [D] DOORS
  74.  
  75.          Doors are programs external to the BBS which may be invoked by
  76.       a remote user. They include on-line games and other entertainment
  77.       programs as well as some utility programs. The [D] command will allow
  78.       you to "open" a door into a different program.
  79.  
  80.   [E] CURRENT EVENTS MENU
  81.  
  82.          The Current-Events menu is used to stimulate interest and activity
  83.       on the bbs. Various topics are available for users to comment on and
  84.       a voting booth is included.

  86.   [F] FILES MENU
  87.  
  88.          The Files menu includes Mach-10's file transfer system. Please see
  89.       the above information on meus or the File Menu's on help file
  90.       for more information.
  91.  
  92.   [G] GOODBYE
  93.  
  94.          The GoodBye option will log you off the system.
  95.  
  96.   [H] HELP
  97.  
  98.          The help option will display this text file which you are currently
  99.       reading.
  100.  
  101.   [J] UTILITIES MENU
  102.  
  103.          The Utilities menu includes the various services within Mach-10
  104.       which are ultity-oriented. (i.e. password change, graphics
  105.       preference, etc.)
  106.  
  107.   [L] LEAVE A COMMENT TO THE SYSOP
  108.  
  109.          The [L] option will allow you to leave a private message to the
  110.       system operater. The comment will be placed in the main area as a
  111.       PRIVATE message addressed to the sysop. This is useful for reporting
  112.       problems or commenting about the system for the sysop.
  113.  
  114.   [M] MESSAGE MENU
  115.  
  116.          The Message menu includes Mach-10's electronic mail services. For
  117.       more information please see the help file in that menu.
  118.  
  119.   [N] NEWUSER FILE
  120.  
  121.          All new users are presented with a file telling of the various
  122.       policies/operating procedures of this bbs system. If you would like to
  123.       view the file again, you may use the [N] option.
  124.  
  125.   [O] ONLINE NEWS (optional)
  126.  
  127.          If the system you are calling subscribes to an online news service,
  128.       this command will invoke the online news viewer.
  129.  
  130.   [P] WHO'S ON OTHER NODE
  131.  
  132.          The [P] option allows you to view who is on another node of the
  133.       system (provided that the system is a multinode bbs - see the below
  134.       [Q] command for more details). The [P] command will tell you
  135.       who (if anyone) is on and what they are currently doing.
  136.  
  137.   [Q] MULTIUSER CHAT
  138.  
  139.          If the system you are calling is a multinode system (i.e. it is
  140.       capable of having more than one user on at the same time), the
  141.       multiuser chat will allow you to talk to the users on the other
  142.       nodes. (NOTE: You may only talk to users who are PRESENT in the
  143.       multiuser chat. If a user is doing something else (such as
  144.       downloading a file) you will not be able to talk to him).

  146.          The ability to PAGE another user is available from inside the
  147.       Multiuser chat. The page will be received by the other user as soon
  148.       as he returns to one of the menus.
  149.  
  150.   [V] VERSION OF MACH-10 SOFTWARE
  151.  
  152.          This command will display the Mach-10 version information as
  153.       well as information about the authors and the origins of Mach-10.
  154.       If you are interested in obtaining a copy, you may find ordering
  155.       information here.

  157.   [W] INITIAL WELCOME
  158.  
  159.          This option will display the intial welcome screen which you
  160.       should have seen at your logon. If the system provides for
  161.       multiple welcomes, one will be selected randomly for you.
  162.  
  163.   [X] EXPERT TOGGLE
  164.  
  165.          The eXpert mode allows you to disable the displaying of menus
  166.       in order to speed up the system. You may turn the expert mode back
  167.       off by typing [X] again or you may display any menu at any time
  168.       by using the [?] command.
  169.  
  170.   [Y] YELL AT THE SYSOP
  171.  
  172.          The [Y] command will cause the system to beep at the system
  173.       operator to inform him that you wish to talk. If the sysop is
  174.       available, he will enter chat-mode where you may talk to
  175.       him.

  177.   [Z] STATISTICS MENU
  178.  
  179.          The Statistics menu provides various statistical information
  180.       about the stautus of the bbs system.

  185. Message Areas/Files Area/Sub-boards
  186. -----------------------------------
  187.  
  188.        Mach-10 includes features which allow for various categorization
  189.   of messages and files. To the new user, the various features may be
  190.   confusing. They area explained below:
  191.  
  192.  
  193.           1) FILE AREA
  194.  
  195.                   A file area is a group of related files. The files are
  196.               usually related as to what thier function is (i.e.
  197.               GAMES, UTILITIES, WORD PROCESSING, etc). File areas are
  198.               NOT selecteable - they can only be viewed. From the files
  199.               menu you will be able to view any file area that you have
  200.               access to. You may download a file from any area that you
  201.               have access to.
  202.  
  203.           2) MESSAGE AREA
  204.  
  205.                   A message-area is a group of related messages. The
  206.               messages are usually related by subject. (i.e. GENERAL,
  207.               PROGRAMMING, etc). Message area ARE selectable - whichever
  208.               message area you select, all message-oriented functions
  209.               will be set for that area.
  210.  
  211.           3) SUB-BOARD
  212.  
  213.                  A Sub-board is a very pwoerful feature that allows the
  214.               linking of both a MESSAGE AREA and A FILES area together.
  215.               Also included may be a sub-board welcome, sub-board bulletins,
  216.               or sub-board menus.
  217.  
  218.                  Most sub-boards will automatically link in both a FILE and
  219.               a MESSAGE area and lock all functions to work specifically
  220.               with that sub-board. (Note: sub-boards do not always link
  221.               in both a message and a files area)
  222.  
  223.                  Sub-board can be either PRIVATE or PUBLIC. A private
  224.               sub-board only allows members access while a public sub-board
  225.               will allow anyone to enter.
